I am considering playing an elf, having never done so before and am experiencing some confusion as to the 5 racial divisions mentioned in character setup: sea-elves, drow, etc.

Could anyone please explain how to choose one of these racial divisons and also the pros and cons of each

I suppose the answer will be very simple, but I just cannot see how it is done

it IS rather simple
You CAN'T choose which race of elves you belong to in BG2 (you can choose between Drow, Moon Elf and something else in IWD2)
You simply get ot be an elf. No drow, no avariel nothing, only thing that would be possible is half-elfof course.
If you really want to play Drow you can maybe alter that with Shadowkeeper (I'm not sure if it works for the PC) but that's about it.

Yup, Faceman's right; just treat that info as an extra bit of interesting trivia, but the game itself isn't doing anything with those racial divisions. Perhaps they had the intention to implement them all in the game when they wrote that bit of information and they just didn't get around to it; or they just had to find an excuse why one of the NPC's, Viconia, wasn't specified as a "Drow" but merely as the more general "elf".
Apart from the already mentioned Icewind Dale II, I think there are a few BG2-mods which allow you to play more specific elf races (Darkest Day for example, IIRC).

Someone somewhere posted a link to a site that explained the differences between the elven subraces (and dwarves and halflings, etc). Does anyone happen to know of a good site that discusses this?

Not sure what site was linked to earlier on, but maybe this site could shed some light on your question.

BTW, there is a mod available from http://chosenofmystra.db-forge.com/m...opic.php?t=325 that enables you to play a subrace in BG2. It's still in the early stages, so quite a few features aren't yet implemented, but it adds to the RP experience nonetheless.
