You never really notice how much junk is floating around in the air around big cities anywhere in the world. If you go off on the water from NYC or another coastal city at night, you can see a huge brown smog cloud enveloping the city, in contrast with the black sky everywhere else. It's not suprising that they wouldn't be able to see a rainbow.

Actually, I've never seen a really distinct rainbow myself, even away from larger cities. It always looks really washed out.

Has anyone ever seen the Aurora up north in Alaska/Greenland?

Then there's the opposite like my town where the effect of the lights on the landscape would be achievable with a 40 Watt light bulb, and stars ain't nothing special.
