"BRB" is usually used in chatrooms or in real-time communications to indicate that you're going to be away from your terminal for a little bit (so that others don't keep hailing you and think that you're ignoring them). It's rarely seen in a forum setting like this.

Others:

AFAIK: As far as I know
OTOH: On the other hand
FWIW: For what it's worth
RTFM: Read the freakin' manual (or something like that )
AFAICT: As far as I can tell
CYA: See ya
FYI: For your information
GMTA: Great Minds Think Alike (used when you answer the same thing as someone else at just about the same time)
PITA: Pain in the @$$
OOB: Out of Bounds
RL: Real Life
J/K: Just Kidding (you'll see that a LOT here!)
OIC: Oh, I see
JAM: Just a Minute
MYOB: Mind Your Own Business
KISS: Keep it simple, sweetie (or "stupid", depends on your mood )
TX: Thanks
TVM: Thanks Very Much
WTH: What the Hell?
WTF: What the ____? (figure it out!)
NP: No problem
ROTFLMAO: Rolling on the floor, laughing my @$$ off

These are just a few. Most of them developed in chat rooms, due to having to type at a very fast speed, to help abbreviate meanings so that participants didn't get bogged down. Now they are used pretty much anywhere, even on forums and in e-mail.

Cheers,

I know lots of people (myself included) that talk like that when they are chatting. I don't use it much when I'm posting on the boards, but in chats, all the time.

Oh, and don't forget my all-time favorite:

Then there's this one: ID10T (pronounced I-D-10-T so as not to give away the true meaning)
