My friends and i got into a debate of sorts after watching Bad Boy Bubby (an aussie cult classic) on foxtel a few weeks ago. I've seen it before, but i'd forgotten just how hysterically funny this film is. Before i get rained on, i should point out that this film is R rated and for good reason. It tackles some pretty sick subject matter. But as far as film techniques, story, screenplay, acting and directing are concerned (especially the acting and directing), this has to be one of the best aussie films ever made.

But anyway, i'm getting sidetracked, the debate: Just about every other aussie film i can name is a bunch of ass! Even the kiwis make better films than us! It's so bad that i find it very hard to sit down and watch an aussie film in its entirety. We all banged our heads trying to come up with some competition for the title of best aussie film, but came up with nothing. Nothing!

So i ask the good people of IW. Is there an aussie film worthy of praise? Place your nominations. If we get enough, i might even compile a list. Feel free to explain what it was you liked about a movie (or even what you disliked). At the end of it all, hopefully i'll be able to go back to my mates with some diginified competition...

Ah Bad Boy Bubby, that was an... interesting film
The only other aussie film worth mentioning is The Castle.

I'm just an ex-pat Pom living in Melbourne, but even I can name a whole heap of Aussie classics....

- Mad Max I and II (although obviously not III which was poop)
- Picnic at Hanging Rock
- Gallipoli
- Rabbit Proof Fence
- Lantana
- Romper Stomper

Haven't seen it yet, but currently taking the rest of the world by storm:

- Wolf Creek (SA-set horror film, based loosely on all the backpacker killers of which Oz is justifiably famous - Milat, Falconio etc)

Shadowhound mentioned The Castle - also by the same team, The Dish.

There's got to be somthing there that you like?

Orbost does mention some great movies that I missed, Mad Max and Romper Stomper are both excellent aussie films

How could i forget Romper Stomper and Mad Max?*bangs head* But as good as they were, they're not in the same league as BBB. Gallipoli was good also. The Castle and The Dish were pre-judged into the "spoon-fed-aussie-comedy" genre and, as such, i didn't bother with them. Was i wrong?

Haven't seen the rest but i hear Lantana is good.

I remembered another one this morning. The Postcard Bandit. The story of Australia's most notorius bank robber, Brendon Abbott. Tom Long is pretty good in this film.

Any more?

Chopper had some truly brilliant moments. I especially liked the scene where they sped up the film during a conversation, but kept the dialogue unaltered - emphasising the fact that they're off their tits! Lots of other good presentation techniques as well but, on the whole, i didn't much like the story that was being told. Still a good movie though.
