A new level of stupid...
Man accused of dealing in police station restroomEVERETT, Wash. – Everett police said a 24-year-old man picked the wrong place to try to deal drugs — a stall in the police station restroom. Police Sgt. Robert Goetz said the man was overheard Wednesday using a cellular telephone to try to sell Oxycodone, a prescription painkiller, and other drugs.Goetz said that as the man was leaving, he saw a gun-wearing plainclothes police sergeant who had overheard the call. The man asked if he was a probation officer. Goetz said the man admitted trying to deal drugs and turned over his stash. He was jailed for investigation of illegal drug possession and intent to sell. Goetz said the man is on probation from an attempted robbery conviction. ===== Ummmm... not much to add here. I hope they don't let him near any pointy things in the slammer... could be dangerous.

Pizzeria owner accused of beating man over calzonePALM COAST, Fla. – Flagler County authorities said a restaurant owner pistol-whipped and beat a customer who complained that his takeout order was incorrect. The owner of Goomba's Pizzeria was charged with aggravated assault and battery with a deadly weapon and released on bail.According to a police report, security footage from the pizzeria shows that the owner struck the customer with a gun. He then jumped over a counter and started to assault the customer and his roommate. The customer was at the pizzeria to collect a refund for a calzone, which he said was prepared incorrectly. He was taken to a hospital after the incident with a bloodied head. ___ Information from: Daytona Beach News-Journal, http://www.news-journalonline.com ======== Okay... the fact that it was Goomba's pizzeria and he was beaten over a calzone just has to move this into Sopranos territory...

Cop reaches into foamy sewage tank to rescue dogKALAMA, Wash. – A Kalama police officer reached into a tank of sewage to rescue a dog that had jumped inside. The officer, Jeff Skeie, was able to grab the sinking dog by the ear Tuesday and pull it out by the scruff of its neck. He had waste only on the sleeves of his uniform until the dog gave itself a vigorous shake, spraying him head-to-toe with sewage. The dog was a stray that took off while its pen was being cleaned. It jumped in the sewage treatment plant's digester and was unable to swim in the foamy liquid. After the rescue, The Longview Daily News reported, the officer took a long shower and the chocolate Labrador had a bath. It was adopted later in the day by a woman who named it Hershey. ___ Information from: The Daily News, http://www.tdn.com ==== Okay, I'll just leave this as a human interest story... kudos to the cop, and to the lady who adopted him. But did she have to call him "Hershey"?

Re: Odd News January 2009
Fire station burns after cooking mishapTOKYO (Reuters) – A blaze broke out at a fire station in Japan this week after a firefighter left a cooking stove burning as crew members left the station to respond to emergency calls. Most of the duty staffers were out on a call when their colleague, alone at the station and cooking dinner for the crew, was himself called out. In his haste to respond to the call, he forgot to turn the stove off, said Seiji Hori, a Nagoya City Fire Department official. Ten fire trucks from other stations put out the fire, Hori added. "We are an institute that should be in a position to educate people about fire, so we are extremely sorry that such an incident happened," Hori said, adding that they would consider ordering-in for dinner from now on. (Reporting by Yoko Kubota; Editing by Jeremy Laurence) ===== Anyone else remember the Porky Pig cartoon where he's a fireman sent out on a training call, only to realize the address was the fire station? I thought this was it, but it isn't

Big birthday present
Boy's wrapped birthday gift is dad back from IraqDAYTON, Nev. – Gabriel Hurles' sixth birthday party wasn't a surprise but his present sure was. The kindergartner was so engrossed in the cupcakes his mother brought to his class on Wednesday that he didn't notice the enormous wrapped box off to the side. "That's one big giant present," a 6-year-old classmate told him. "See what you got, Gabriel."Gabriel peeled back the wrapping paper to find the surprise of his young life — his father, an Army mechanic back in Nevada on leave from his second tour in Iraq. "It's my dad!" he told his classmates at Sutro Elementary School in Dayton a few miles northeast of Carson City. "Hi daddy." Army Spc. Casey Hurles, 23, hadn't seen his son since he left in June. When he learned his leave would coincide with his son's birthday, he hatched the plan to hide out in the 4-foot tall box. "It was such a rush of emotion," said Hurles, who said he got butterflies in his stomach while waiting in the box. After Hurles sat down and ate a cupcake with the birthday boy, teacher Dawn VanSickle presented him with a banner from the class that read, "Welcome Home. Thank you for your service." VanSickle said she was happy to arrange the reunion in her classroom. "One of the first things (Gabriel) shared about himself was that his dad was in Iraq and that he was waiting for his dad to come home," she said. "He talks about his dad all the time." Hurles, who joined the Army four years ago, is a mechanic in the 1st Cavalry Division stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He completed one tour in Iraq and is seven months into his second tour. He expects to finish sometime between June and September. Gabriel said he looks forward to playing with his dad over the next two weeks but understands why he has to leave again. "He has to work," Gabriel said. "He works in the war." ===== Not really odd... just a feelgood bit. Happy birthday, son...and thanks, dad...
