i have a mage scroll from a deceased evil mage so what does it do?

Right-click on it (in your inventory screen) and see what it says. Have you just started the game? If you haven't come across scrolls before, they can be written into your spell-book or used in a quick-item slot - no need to memorise them, but they are used up after one use. I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but I'm not sure how far you are into the game...

If you can't read it (meaning that if you can't see that it's a scroll of magic missiles or something) and it's green in colour ... it could be a curse of some sort. If you're curious get it identified at a temple or wait until one of you characters can id it (bards are good) before trying to copy it or read it.
