Hi all,

well this is my first post here after waiting over two weeks for my registration to appear...must be busy!

Anyway, i'm fairly experienced when it comes to this sort of thing being an old skool D&D player, warhammer fantasy roleplay, 40k, hero quest, all the old software titles including dungeon master and the only just mentioned by someone else bards tale (how good a spell was mind blade!!!)
anyway, my point...

I have only played Baldurs Gate in this series so far and loved it so was expecting a lot from icewind but am feeling slightly deisapointed.

Unlike some others (i've been reading posts), i liked the idea of creating my own party...i am the sort who will sit there all night if nesc to get good stats! I also have a tried and tested party formation which in this case includes two mages...i dont remember for the life of me having such an unpleasent time with mages in baldurs gate but did anyone else have a complete nightmare trying to cast something pokey like fireball without running out of casting time and being mauled in hand to hand or burning the hell out of your own party! the timing and fireball diameter seemed to ruin the whole point!! This may be partly to do with map creation or the games mistimings but i gotta say, i didnt like this aspect at all...

On another issue, has anyone heard of why i might be getting an error something to the effect of 'programmer says that WAB file cannot be used'...i forget the exact wording and have lost the piece of paper it was witten down on but it happened 30 out of 30 times i tried loading the area after the ice palace and salamanders...you know, the cave in the bottom right corner...EXTREMELY IRRITATING as now i have uninstalled the game and washed my hands with it! I even installed the patch but still it refuses to work. There should be no hardware problems as this is the first error i have encountered!! Also, i then started again as a single player ranger...got to level 8 in the lizard man caves and then level up'd and the game crashed...did it again and again and again...this was the final straw! I got rid of the installation as i just said am annoyed i spent so long playing it!

First of all, welcome to ironworks.

Sounds like a corrupted file problem, but some basic questions need answering first.

Did you buy the game new or used? If you bought it used, are the cd's in really good shape?

Are you doing a full install or a partial installation?

Are you sure you are using the proper patch? If you are playing IWD only, you want to use ONLY the latest IWD patch (proper language version IS important). Applying an HOW patch to IWD or vice versa can cause SERIOUS prolbems.

If you had the complete error message, it MIGHT be possible to just replace the damage/corrupted file.

The cd's are new and original and the same problem occured on three independant full installations with the IWD (not HOW) 1.6 patch.
I guess that if my registration had got here sooner, i would have asked for the file in question but i lost my rag!!!! oh, god....i simply cant resist it...i'm now going to have to reinstall IWD and get back to you on the corrupt file arrrgh

Apparently this is a VERY uncommon problem.

EDIT: IMPORTANT - This sounds like you need to have the UK version of the patch installed!

This is STRAIGHT off the Blackisle Forums FAQ

This problem effects UK versions of Icewind Dale. You will get a crash when leaving Wyrm's Tooth and trying to enter Lower Dorn's Deep. Often, you will get an Assertion Error at line 1763.

Download the patch to fix this problem here. Download the patch from the "UK version for error 1763" link.

The patch to fix this problem is safe to install even if you have Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster installed.

This patch does not replace the 1.06 patch for Icewind Dale, you should still install that patch if you do not have the expansions.

EDIT 2: here is the link for that patch update:

http://www.interplay.com/support/pro...eid=24#patches

scroll down the page just a bit ... its the iwdukpatch.exe file at 5.9 mb

THAT should fix you up.

I don't think you have much to worry about, IWD is a good game, though for me I hate the beginning. It only really got good for me when I went to

might be a spoiler

when i went to dorn's deep, but that's like in the 4 or 5 chapter, so the beginning might be a bit slow my friend but take heart!!!There will be plenty of more things to kill and more equipment to own!!!And I myself have attempted playing with 2 mages, it's not always the funnest thing to do, but that's just b/c I would hate to have to have 2 different characters writing spells all the time.

Cheers Micah,

Am d/l'ing now so will let you know how it goes! See no reason why it wont work tho...

Malavon - I loved the start! The start of games is always the best for me as later on it gets waaayyyy involved and serious! Leisurely and none too stressful I have always tried to play virtually the same way with groups (unfortunately?) and have done so in nearly every game where you get to character create! Two mages, one cleric, two fighters and one specialist usually a paladin but this time i went for a ranger. Having two mages IS an interesting point and sometimes leaves me panicking particularly when attacked from behind but hey ho!

Let us know how that works for you. It should clear things up though.

IWD is actually fairly even in terms of difficulty. There are a few very challenging encounters but the level of difficulty scales pretty well throughout the game.

I would definately agree and good for it too!

Games can be ruined by impossibly difficult later levels but IWD doesnt do that. The most difficult bit for me so far was the fight with Xyunomei (or whatever her name is) and i didnt use any of the techniques others have discussed! I just went blazing in with my Dwarven fighter who single handedly took her out while everyone else nearly died sorry deaths from the rest of the monsters around! As i chose not to have a thief in the party i suffered badly in the bit with loads of traps (but i knew that was going to happen sooner or later) but overall the game has been very good and i cant wait to enter lower dorns
