I just read a rather interesting article in a Dutch newspaper. Apparently, the use of drugs among the Dutch youth is among lowest in the Western world. Of all the 15 year old Dutch students, 26% has used Cannabis at some point (while I believe almost everyone has access to it). In a country like Greenland, its 46%, but countries like France and the United States also score a lot higher. Both of which have a bit of a zero-tolerance drugs policy (although I believe it is rarely enforced in France). The same goes for marriages. Of the students that live in the first country to legalize gay marriages (still talking about us), 83% still live with their biological parents. Against 60% in the US. The nation that considers families to be the cornerstone of society. Now, I’m not aware of all the reasons behind these differences, but it did get me to wonder if tolerance and an open approach is perhaps preferable over a zero-tolerance crackdown on such ‘offenses’. Opinions?

This is a complicated issue and I haven't got time to consider it properly, but from quick consideration it seems that the zer-tolerance approach is not that good. It makes getting the drugs or whatever more risky and thus adventurous and "fun" and also a lot of valuable police resources are used up enforcing the zero-tolerance which could be used elsewhere.
Finally, as you say, the statistics seem to speak for themselves, although there could be many other factors involved that lead to those stats. [ 06-05-2004, 02:01 PM: Message edited by: Vaskez ]

My experience is that whenever something is illegal, people will be tempted into using it sooner than when it's legal. I guess it's just human nature to be noughty.

How are all these gay cannabis smokers married but still living at home? Or are they related? Tolerance doesn’t apply to every culture!

Learn to read english Ironbar, then you might understand Dreamer's post He said that in the country that first legalised gay marriages, 83% of students still live at home. Now that wasn't so complicated was it?

I am glad to see that the irony of my post wasn't lost on you then! The original topic post didn't flow too well. What do students have to do with marriage or gay marriages? The two concepts are introduced together but have no relevance to each other in this context. If they had been introduced separately, then it would have made sense. However, as that is not the case then I don't see how you can respond in the manner that you did to my post but I am glad that you did.

It was the relationship between Gay Marriages and the stability of the family that was important.

Your post WOULD have been ironic had the original post been muddled, however it wasn't so it just looks like you misunderstood it
