Soo...
anyone know how one might find out what Ip and what DNS is currently open on a network?
or how to open the closed ones?

my brother likes to turn off my connection when im away from the puter and using up bandwidth through downloads or whatnot, but usually forgets to turn it back on and he refuses to tell me how to undo it on the basis that he thinks i wont understand it so why should he explain it.

You're asking the wrong questions. You don't TURN ON or OFF IP or DNS addresses. Do you mean he's changed the Server IP address and DNS addresses that your internet connection uses? To change them back go to
Control Panel->Networking and Dial-up connections
-> Right click on the connection you use for the internet and select properties.
Go to the networking tab and select TCP/IP protocol. Click properties and here you can set the IP and DNS addresses - you'll have to find out what to set it to although I'm surprised you have to set it since most connections obtain an IP address automatically.

Kindof hard to figure out what your brother is doing... is he changing something on your computer or is he changing something in a network server, router or proxy server? Do you have broadband or dialup? Why would he disable your net connection if you're downloading?

im not sure exactly how he does it either
he does not change anything on my computer itself to affect the change, its probably something to do with the network server.

I know it has something to do with the DNS and IP since if i wanted to i can go through the trouble of going over to his computer and writing down what ip/dns hes using and then putting them into my computer to be used instead of the old, and it works. but thats a pain since then i have to turn his puter off before i reboot mine and sometimes i cant turn his off since theres something im not sure is saved or whatnot going on.

He does it cuz when im using the network i usualy take up a great deal of the bandwidth so it really slows down his connection and he doesnt care that i am inconvenienced because he forgets to reconnect me.

So you are using Internet connection sharing where his comp is the server? That makes it a bit clearer - in that case there is nothing you can do from your comp - you have to invade his comp to re-enable your connection... not sure exactly how though.

Just a note: you are also being inconsidderate with your own bandwidth consumption while you are away. Without trying to guess why your bandwidth needs are constantly excessive for your network

, why not try limiting your own network usage to times when he won't be using it. That way he wouldn't need just drastic measures to cut you off. Both of you need to be more considderate of each other. If you have a pressing need for a particular download (the latest Linux build for example) let him know ahead of time as a courtesy. That way he knows ahead of time why you are ginding the network to a halt. Then try not to have an "urgent" download 10x a day ...

Also, most uh ... high bandwidth applications ... have ways to limit downstream and upstream traffic and the number of concurrent connections. Learn about these settings so you don't overly tax your brother's network. It may take longer to do what you want, but so what if you are not baby sitting the traffic, and it's not critical traffic.

getting a personal firewall may also increase your effective bandwidth. ZoneAlarm did a great job for me as it was shutting down a lot of dead connections which were taking up BW. Maybe it's just my imagination/wishful thinking but I figure it improved my download rates incredibly(not over my bandwidht max of course but my average download rate was a lot lower than my virtual max and now happens to be at 60-70% of it.)

he made a seperate computer handle the network, his computer and mine and a few others are connected to it.

My dad needs the network during the daytime for his work so that just leaves the night time, which me and my brother 'share'.

i generally go to sleep after i set the puter to download whatever it is i want, and hell generaly cut my connection whenever its convenient to him, sometimes forgetting to put it back on by the time i wake. so i cant view web pages and such that use minimal bandwidth unless i do that switching of ips and dns that i mentioned - which is a lot of work.

Also, how do these high bandwidth applications work? when i talk to my brother about doing such things to limit my bandwidth usage he says that the network just doesnt work like that - it would always use the most it could and changing settings on the network for a limit on uploads or downloads would limit his uploads/downloads as well so it would result in us sharing a smaller pot instead of fixing the sharing to be more equal.

im not sure a firewall is a good fix, we had one in the past, but there was a lot of problems with it and the games/programs/long distance networking we use.

this utility allows you to (with permision) take control of somone elces desktop. that way you could both run the server app, and your brother can pause some of your downloads, or you could get the new DNS info:
