They're getting more and more frequent, and more and more annoying. You know those messenger popups which advertise sites that stop those popups? Anyone know of any sites (other than the ones that usually get advertised) that can block them, without blocking javascript or flash windows?

two options:
1. open the console (run/cmd.exe) and enter the command 'net stop messenger'. i'm not sure though, if this will stop it permanently or just until you restart windows 2. go to control panel/administrative tools/services and stop and disable the messenger service. if you disable it here it is definitely permanent . Firewall, should block all messenger service traffic going through it.

there's a nice tool out on the web called XP-Antispy which allows you to disable lots of "unwanted features" of Windows XP including the Messenger and Microsofts data gathering from your desktop.

I had the same problem when I installed win2K. I got my firewall to block them. It kind of makes you wonder though, if win2k,me,and xp are all supposed to be more secure than win95/98 why didnt I have this problem with win 98??
