What's especially interesting is that he explained to the person exactly how he or she is being tracked... so that he or she can go correct those things.
'Course, the secondary question is why this prof left so much sensitive data on a computer that was so easily taken.... and left it unprotected, too. I'm interested in the rest of the story as well. Here's hoping there's lots more!

Windows update.
Basicaly sends out all your user details off to MS before it let's to get any updates, this includes the CD key and so on. There are other instances where this information is sent, but it is not a standard operating procdure..

I bet that this professor whose laptop was stolen will probably also face quite a few issues with those huge companies that he works with. Security for material of that importance is a very high priority for those companies, and he was in charge of the security for his laptop. It does not matter that the laptop was stolen by someone else, that professor (or whoever he was) was still responsible for it.
I do not condone that the stealing of the laptop is O.K. and I think the student should be punished severely for the theft (expulsion at least, IMO), but if it was that important, then the professor was foolish to leave it unattended in a place where it could be compromised. Whatever happens with this case, I doubt that professor will be working for any of these big companies after this incident, or at least will not be entrusted with any important material. I hope he has tenure because this incident could look bad for the school (major companies opting not to work with the school for fear of a security breach which would mean the loss of a lot of money) and they may decide to solve the issue by removing all parts of the problem. I am also pretty impressed with the 15 minute reinstall of Windows. I have a very fast computer at work and it still takes almost 25 minutes to install Windows XP Pro on that machine...I personally think that the first thing that professor did was soil himself for 15 minutes when he realized that the laptop was missing, and then reinstall Windows .

Griefmaker, we don't know where or how the laptop was stolen.
You don't expect adult students to steal from certain places, if he'd had it locked up in a locker or something simmilar then it's pure theift.. We just don't know. Now if it was in his office then it should have been safe, sorry no excuses whoever took it is scum and should suffer rightly for such... Stealing is wrong, never, ever defend a theif. There is no justification. Will the prof get in trouble, depends if he'd left it in the middle of a park on a bench then yea he's gonna get it in the rump, but theift happens he's not going to lose his job because he got robbed, if he did he'd be sueing for unfair dissmissal with a very strong chance of getting whatever he demands.
