I've got to report that I've had good luck with XP. ME was crap, but I won't upgrade my wife's computer to XP for the exact problems you're having. I've got her ME "stable" so I'll just wait until next year sometime when we do our 3-year upgrade of her laptop (i.e. buy a new one), which I'll get with XP. I've installed OS's before and find it very frustrating.

If you've installed XP correctly, the drivers shouldn't be so much of an issue. All of my old peripherals have worked by simply plugging them in - including older printers and an optical mouse that pre-dated XP, as well as an external drive. The only one that has not worked is my scanner, and since it works on my wife's machine I can't be bothered to fight with it.

For stability, I find XP to be really good. Mine has crashed once in the past 14 mos. I've owned it - and it's the simple home version. I've gotten most games, including old ones, to work, except for Lords of the Realm2 and WH40K Chaos Gate (anyone used these and have any knowledge about this?).

Did you get your maintenance programs? Personally, I won't use any OS without the appropriate version of a scan/maintain tool like Norton.
