Okay....
I'm trying to register my HL2 cd-key, and I'm having problems. I copied the files from a DVD drive on my home network, and when I go to register my cd-key, steam tells me to insert my CD/DVD. It's obviously not paying attention to the DVD drive on the networked computer....so how do I fix it. Do NOT say "Go buy a DVD ROM". That is not a valid option. I will only consider that a last resort.

you could try making an alcohol or clonecd image of the dvd, transferr it to the computer that you're trying to install hl2 on and mount the image with daemon tools or alcohol.
some games can detect virtual dvd/cd software and refuse to run in such cases, but as far as i know hl2 is not among them. |

Well, it was a mixed success.
It registered fine, but now I can't play the damn thing. I'll just go and buy a DVD-ROM.

have you upgraded your current DVD? go to the manufacturer's site and update it's "drivers", otherwise known as firmware.

I don't have a DVD-ROM. The DVD-ROM I was using is loaded in my dad's machine, I was trying to register it over the network.
Anyway, I tried mounting the virtual DVD drive, and I was able to register, but can't play. Ah well.
