Hmmm... popping in late... I don't know prices on your side of the pond, but over here, watching the sales, you can pick up a new 17" monitor for under 100 bucks. LAst one I bought was around $50. At that price, I'd definitely go with new -- the last used one I got (for $25) I had to bring back three times before I got one I was satisfied with.
Around here, local PC shops have "bare bones" PCs -- the basics of a general grunt PC that you can upgrade later when you have the [img]graemlins/twocents.gif[/img] They start around $300 without OS, which they can add in. You might look for local PC shops in your area with something similar. As for the configs... IMHO, unless you're an extreme gamer, a good middling system will do you fine. If you are extreme [img]smile.gif[/img] then spend money on a vid card and memory, or budget for them later. And here's where I duck, since my machine clearly shows I'm a schmuck gamer [img]smile.gif[/img] Good luck.
