Imagine the possibilities - i belive that before 2100, someone will make a game which totally, by practically ALL aspects, will be like AD&D. will there be any sequels to Doom series, BG series, Final Fantasy, Unreal, Quake, Icewind Dale, Fallout, Planescape: Torment, even Neverwinter Nights(wow... NwN 2 *drooling*)? What will the graphics be like? What will games require? Will there be a new and strange platform which will take over all other platform users?
and most of all, what will happen to the games we call awesome, new and cool right now? will they be downloadable free or something? god, there are so many questions i want answered.. btw, think how fast have computergames evolved through the years! BG 1 was made 1998, NwN, as a whole new thing, summer 2002. 5 years ago, games were MUCH less great. |

Two Words: Virtual Reality.
Total Immersion, imagine you get to fight a 'real'-size Dragon... heh, heh, heh... ... "NOOOO! Not the foot again! Of course, it would require wiring up your brain... ... |

I dont think the basic setup - screen, keyboard and mouse - will change that much. Unless society accepts wiring people up to computers or some radical new technology like practical hologrpahy comes along.
Games in that time will probly fall into the same categroies as today and a true ad&d sim will remain the dream of gamers since its not clear its even *possible* for any computer to emulate a human DM to an accceptable level. Graphics and such will obviously be superior to those we have now, but I dont think that they will be all that much better, Since game development times wont be long enough to create photo-realistic graphics for a game as complex and BG2. Infinite-poly engines will help take some of the work out of course. Current series will lilkely not last long enough to make it to 2100, although the best will likely be rememberd and hopefuly up for free download. (With some of the estimates ive seen recently, BG2 will fit on one of that eras floppy-equivalents several times over) Hopefuly well see the end of the varying computer specs - technology should become powerful enough that a basic set-up will exceed the requirements of any game - something were already seeing - and so most gamers will have a similar setup.

Virtual reality, from what Sony is spending alot of R&D money on for upcoming Playstation incarnations, and its being developed by smaller players for the pc as well. Full sensory immersion is the way to go!!!!!!
