Re: problem at startup
Just to say - I tried everything in this thread and always got the memory error problem. SoI am going back to software mode, which by my viewing is not that much different to hardware mode! Would love to see comparison vids on You Tube!

I even get problems in software mode with that memory access problem, like every time I even approach the lever in the first crypt room that gets you into the crypt proper! |

Re: problem at startup
That is bad news!
I stopped playing W&W because it caused my PC cpu to become overworked. You could hear the difference when it was playing and when it was not. Edit: this is generally a problem with any game possessing elaborate graphics, not just W&W. It becomes a problem when my flat becomes warm, air conditioning is not too good. Edit: On this page you will find many save game files, including three for W&W. The larger two are for parties that are nearly finished. This is one massive spoiler but it will enable you to check the entrances to all dungeons, not just the crypt. http://www.tk421.net/wizardry/files.shtml Last edited by Shadow Stranger; 12-05-2008 at 12:47 AM. |

Re: problem at startup
Agreed - it would be nicer if all the new posts weren't problems but it is still good to see that the game is being played.
Wish I knew solutions. Bungleau should have some ideas when he can get back on - he has helped SO many players!!! Wyv

Re: problem at startup
Hmmm... let's see if I can remember what I was thinking...
Shadow Stranger, are you sure you're hearing the CPU straining? That'd be the first time I *ever* heard a CPU talk... the fans, maybe, but not the CPU. And if the cooling fan is talking, you may want to replace it. They ain't supposed to say anything... I think the best answer long-term to getting this to play is going to end up being a Win98 virtual machine. As soon as I rework this machine, I'm going to look at adding one in. It would make so many things so much easier... Oh, and I do believe this is the first time I've heard *ANYONE* referring to W&W as having elaborate graphics I take it you have the same appreciation of gameplay over eye candy that I have... I think that's all I had to say. Onward!

Re: problem at startup
Actually it is the fan, I assumed it was the CPU putting pressure on the fan but it may just be the fan itself.

Re: problem at startup
How old's the machine? It may be worth replacing the fan... they're pretty cheap, but if they go, they can take out a CPU in a matter of seconds... motherboards, too.
Interesting, though...

Re: problem at startup
I received the machine about four years ago, the fan works normally except when you are using graphics-intensive programs, like games found on CDs.
