Have you ever been infected with a virus while running PC-Cillin? If not, then I'd say it fares quite well.

I started using Norton Disk Doctor in 1990 and have been faithful. BUt no more, and here's why.

If you do not want to continue to pay to subscribe to virus updates, you will deal with a pop-up every few days reminded you to go update your definitions. This feature cannot be turned off and operates independently of the start menu.

So, unless you intend to buy a "subscription service" in addition to your program,
BURN IT BURN IT BURN IT - DO NOT INSTALL IT.
I also used NDD back in the early 90's (Oh how I miss Norton Disk Edit). I moved away from it when windows came around, mostly due to the fact that I found I had many fewer problems that required it, and that windows could handle the few times it was an issue. In the last few years I've started using it again, for two reasons. First I get the virus definitions for free, and second, Windows is totally incapable of defraging (what it sees as) a large (400+GB) Hard drive.

Norton tends to be better at dealing with some things, but I don't think its worth the money unless you have a really good reason for installing it.

Windows XP and Norton Utilities 2002 had known issues. They conflicted. Perhaps there was a patch I dont know about but there were only a few things that would work from Norton with XP. Windoctor was one of the few that would work properly.

Ive read in about a dozen different articles that XP users wouldnt gain much by using Norton because XP already has most of the utilities built into the OS.

Norton was intended to run on Win98 and ME. Thats why they made the big switch when they came out with Norton Utilities 2003. I havent tried it yet but I understand its much better suited to XP than the 2002 version was.
