The reason I'm posting this subject is that I'm currently watching a fire in the roof a nearby 9-storey appartment block ( in can see it out of my 4-storey window)
What is it about disasters and accidents that are so fascinating - are we all ghouls who relish in death or it just morbid curiousity ( or something else) P.S. I did call the fire department (although someone else beat me to it) and they have arrived. P.P.S It is early afternoon over here now - so there's probably not a lot of people at home

Good question. I guess its just common human nature to watch that kind of things. You can see that is true since the coloured newspapers (ekstrabladet in dk, the sun in uk etc.) have the highest number of sales.

Yeah, but I've read about disasters where firefighters couldn't rescue people because so many onlookers had blocked routes to beleaguered people by standing there ans gawping.

I was trying to start a serious discussion about peoples fascination with accidents and disasters - the fire was just an example. [ 06-27-2002, 12:19 PM: Message edited by: Ar-Cunin ]

Consequently is a 'bad day' really a bad day? How many things worked that you took for granted? Like breathing, walking, feeling, eating, seeing, thinking. Miracles all. |

It's a strange thing indeed. The best example is possibly a freeway accident. It happens and suddenly all the other cars are slowing down and some of them actually stop, mostly cousing more accidents to happen. I think people somehow want to see blood and once they've seen it they turn away in disgust. Very strange !!!

I guess people like to be reminded of their mortality. I remeber when I was younger, rented a series of VCR tapes - Faces of death (I think). Very very horrible documentary but at the end of the show, me and my friend reminded ourselves that life is short (in some cases, extremly short) and we should enjoy every second of it.
