Silk - Welcome to the Forum.
I'm a relative newcomer myself. This place is great. I'm playing through BGII for the first time also and it sounds as if we are close to the same level. I just defeated the mummies and vampires in Windspear last night. Here's what I did. S P O I L E R / / / / / / / / / / / / First, I left the entire party in the "connecting hallway" so they would be out of sight. I equipped Yoshimo with the Daystar sword (found in secret room of the Crooked Crane in City Gates district - You have to fight a lich, but he is suprisingly easy to beat). The Sunray spelldoes 3D6 + 1D6/level of caster and Yoshimo is 16th level. He then used a Ring of Invisibility and entered the hallway that leads to the room full of mummies and vampires, lifting the Fog of War so I could see the doorway to the undead room. Aerie carries the Staff of Air +2 (from the Astral Prison/Haer'Dalis Quest). I used it to summon a Lesser Air Elemental in front of the doorway (this turned out to be a VERY good idea). Jaheira also summoned a Fire Elemental, but I didn't really need him. I then cast Improved Invisibility on Aerie and had her go into the hallway next to Yoshimo. The mummies and vampires were wasting thier time on the 2 elementals. The beauty of this strategy is that the Lesser Air Elemental is so large, he completely blocked the doorway - preventing any undead from slipping past. I then cast Holy Smite with Aerie (level 10) and Sunray with Yoshimo. WOOOOWWWW! Most Impressive! There was just 1 vampire left standing when the 2 spells wore off. Since the door was still blocked, he just stood there helplessly as the rest of the party finished him off with arrows. No Fuss - No Muss (and especially - NO LEVEL DRAIN!!!) PS - I also found a good strategy for dealing with Samia and her group, if you are interested. [ 11-13-2001: Message edited by: Cerek the Barbaric ]

Hm, I just took my undead hunter (any guy with imunity to level drain will do the job, though), let the rest of the party stand out of sight of the undead , gave the undead hunter the shield against domination and charm. He had an AC of -8 and was almost never hit by the enemy. Level drain didn´t work, domination was impossible and without this the vampires are helpless...

I must say that Cereks strategy did seem to be the best. Sounded really cool just to block them and hurl everything u got. But i have alas decided to start again as i was in a bit of a pickle having nothing really very specialist at my disposal. Thanx all i think my life become so much easier over all these entries as i now have a little bit of strategy!!!!

Um, well, for those of us who are still mere mortals... nobody else here ever bothered with a protection from undead scroll? I mean, total immunity to physical attacks from the undead for 10 turns sounds pretty good to me...
Welcome! I'm new here, too. These guys are all VERY creative. I'm a lazy schmuck. If you really get stuck on F. and are ready to give up, check my recent thread on him. It's another real forehead slapper.

Hello, Russ - and a Hearty Welcome to you too.
Unfortunately, I had no Protection From Undead scrolls and my primary character (Cerek) is a Wizard Slayer...not much help against vampires. My first go around with these guys, I ended up losing 23 levels between my 4 fighter-types (Cerek, Minsc, Keldorn, & Yoshimo). I didn't realize I got level drained with EACH hit (OUUUCH!) Keldorn was taken from 12th level down to 3rd!!!! I had to re-start from the beginning of the Temple. My winning strategy was actually about my 5th try. I beat them each time, but not without someone getting level drained. So I finally threw the 2 biggest back-ups I had (the elementals) against the room while Yoshi and Aerie did their thing. I didn't know the Air Elemental would block the door - that was just a lucky break. Still, I learned a lot from that encounter - mainly to make sure to SAVE the game BEFORE any major encounter!!!

get yourself an undead hunter, and send him in with a magic weapon. that should do the trick.

quote: Definitely get the scrolls. They kicked the crap out of us, as well, and I had to go off to the side room and raise somebody from the dead. Real pain. But later on, it motivated me to let my fingers do the walking in Athkatla... So scrolls, shopping, saving... "Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You all got that?!"
