I'm upgrading my archaic 56.6k modem for a DSL and I read about something called T1 which has amazing throughput (1000k+). Can anyone enlighten me as to what this T1 thing is, please.

And don't say Arnie...

T1 offers faster speeds. T1 is a term coined by AT&T for a system that transfers digital signals at 1.544 megabits per second (as opposed to ISDN's mere 64 kilobits per second). Of course, if T1 doesn't cut it, there's always T3. (T2 seems to have been bypassed altogether.)

Thanks guys, external events have forced my hand in getting a DSL. My ISP, a company called OneTel, has just gone bankrupt, apparently they only have enough cash to pay employees their entitlements for 1 week and that's it. This is after the 2 founders of the company paid themselves $7.5m bonuses EACH on top of their $500k salaries last November. The very next day OneTel recorded a $290m loss (or something around that). Now they've gone belly up and bad luck on the mum and dad investors, and for the workers.

What do you think the chances are of these 2 guys giving their bonuses back so that their staff can be paid? ZERO!!!

Can't they face some sort of criminal charges? Seems to me this would be embazzlement or something. Surely you can't just walk out with 14 mil in your pocket and leave everyone else high and dry!

Unfortunatly this happens all the time in the world of business! Its enough to make your blood boil, unless you happen to be a piece of s**t executive! British Telecom just paid their new exec a couple a mill bonus and then asked their shareholders to forfit their dividends to help cover a 32 billion pound debt the company had rung up buying worthless 3G licences in the UK!!
Lets kill em all I say!!!

Memsy, many businesses around here use T1 and T3. I've a friend in the Boston area with a T1 connection and networked pcs in her home. Does lots of reasearch for her husbands company. She also has dsl. The T1 is their most stable access to the Internet. Also, as you may imagine, the most costly of the options.

Good luck on the connection front. That's really awful when companies to that. I'm still fuming a go.com . Lost my whole website when they folded...sigh

Look at it this way, you will be SUPER fast and then you can do twice as much...or...hmmm, that's not good, you are already too busy! Ahh...look at it this way, then: you can do all that you do now in much less time! No more long tedious upload/dl and waiting for graphics laden pages to load!

Love LOVE Love my cable modem!

Your going to get a T1 at your house? Must be nice being loaded! It might be a bit of an overkill, but it sure would be cool...

Have you priced them? Around here, with a block of IP's you could be looking to pay around 1000-2000 dollars (US) per month for a T1.
