One line that surprised me, "~ Don't buy the line about multi-tasking. ~"
Er... Macs cannot multitask? I was under the impression that they can. I only got a 266 MHz PC, but I sure as heck can multitask. 256 SD RAM in case you are wondering. [ 09-13-2002, 02:51 AM: Message edited by: Dundee Slaytern ] |

Well, for one thing, working with 48 MB RAM and saying Macīs are better then PCīs with Adobe Photoshop.. get rael man. I work professionally with both Macīs and PCīs and they both suck after some time of hard working.
Only with rendering engine and altivec core plugins can you beat the PC that works at similiar speed. Macīs have an advantage in about 75% of the filters, the rest is the sam, except that PC is better wrking with many programs at the same time. Macīs stel more RAM and use it up quicker due to the allocation. Deathbringer, get more RAM, you will need it if you run on the later OSīs from Mac and rebuiled your desktop, run a complete disc tool and Norton check. Also check the startup items, remove everything that you dónīt need. Also, make sure you have the latest upgrades for your version of Photoshop. Also check the drivers for your video card, but probably the best thing is to completely reinstal your Photoshop and then increase the memory allocated to it. Has helped me several times for Macintosh.. and PC! Having worked with both Macīs and PCīs.. I can only dream of Star Trek technology cause both systems have flaws in them. Tge general urban myth is that Macīs are better then PCīs for working with graphics. Untrue, how do I know? I compair my work on a PC with the G4īs beside me. It all comes down to how much you know about your computer and the work you make, for some people, you could make the X-box your workstation no problemo. So please, keep the PC vs Mac campaigns out of these threads aiiight?

Several programs at once!? - er.. I can't have more than two running at once. "Not enough memory" *hits Mac* Also I noticed on one mac, that finder it-self was using 98mb ram! That's a bit much isn't it? All the other macines use about 30mb for finder. Oh and believe me, Mac's do chew up more ram than pc's. example: I was looking up the system requirements for a program and it said minimum ram (pc)- 32mb minimum ram (mac) - 98mb Wow! that's a pretty big difference really. *sigh* is it true that you can put pc ram in a mac? if so I'll take a 512mb stick in |

Apple has always provided superior tools to the graphics industry, not that Microsoft couldn't, they just haven't yet for whatever reason. Two key features the Mac's have are better fonts and color control, these could be integrated into windows (the Mac's have had em for years) but haven't been. Apple is also more aggressive in persueing schools and universities... "get em hooked on Mac's young and you'll have em for life" If only they could get onto a decent hardware platform... I'd buy one. |

I'm a Graphic Designer/Multimedia Developer and Mac's are very rearly used in my industry. 3D animation is ALL PC. and these days Pc's are producing the 'original product'. I only use Mac's sometimes at Uni because it provides me with training. Oh and Mac's persue schools and uni's because they don't sell as much to the general public as Pc's do and they have to keep up in the market. |

Multimedia is probably a wash between the two (other than the fact that PC has MUCH faster hardware these days)... although it's changing most of the feature animations that are cg are still done on Unix boxes. (I'm not aware of one that hasn't been anyway)
Destop Publishing and Graphics design has been a stronghold of the Mac for years... it's got MUCH better Color and Font Management built right into the OS, Professionals can use that platform and have basically publishable output without jumping through hoops. Unless things have changed recently this was not true of the PC (which still does stuff like rely on the Monitor manufacturers to provide color tuning utilities... dumb) and Postscript support is also to my knowledge STILL better on the MAC. |

Good post Wolfgir.
I know it's been said, but I just thought I'd add how PC's have become much faster than Macs are. The G4 is a dying processor. It is completely inferior to current PC technologies. The G4 only has about 1.3 GB/S bus data throughput. PC's are currently up to 4.8 GB/S. Sure Altavec helps out, but Intel's Hyperthreading just about equals things out. Give me a dually Xeon w/ Rambus over a dually G4 w/ sdram any day. BTW, the new G4 w/DDR ram is crap. There is no speed difference between the two whatsoever. It's just a marketing gimmick. Don't get me wrong, I love Macs and I use them quite a bit, but I really prefer pc's in pretty much every aspect. Check this site out for a funny compromise.

If your computor is crashing all the time, and you are having to restart, try reinstalling the system software. Macs need that every couple of months...don't ask me why, they just do. If that doesn't work, then I would suggest taking the mac in to a mac place for a tune up. Tell the people there your problem, and they have it done in a couple of hours. If it still is giving you troubles, buy a PC Hope this helps ya, DB! |
