EDMONTON (CP) - An Edmonton man survived a 40-metre plunge down an open manhole early Tuesday morning, say emergency officials.

While it sounds amazing to fall so far down a manhole, the sides did slow his decent. But the other question is why was the manhole cover off. That is a very dangerous situation.

I would think maybe some kids may have removed it for fun. There is always the possibility that some city workers forgot to replace it but that would be very irresponsible.

Trivia question: Why are manhole covers (and the holes they cover) round?

Well for one thay are fairly heavy and hard to handle so being round

1. You can roll it as oposed to being forced to lift it.
2. It will fit no matter how it is placed.

Good reasons, but there's one other one that I'm specifically thinking of. Think of the klutz factor...

As for the covers I believe it has something to do with that these covers can't fall down in the manholes, they're to wide. Now square covers can slide down in certain angles especially if the manholes are round. I've heard this explained in a TV show some time ago.

The thing is that the idea is false. You can still design a square manhole cover that will never fit through the hole. The key is how much overlap you have. I don't believe you would be able to fit square cover down a hole either with the same overlap as the round one. Rectangles sure the overlap will have to be much larger but still possible to design it so it will never fit.

More amazing falls

- Drunk Swedish 14 year old girl fell down from the fifth floor of a building and landed on the asphalt while sustaining no injuries other than a few minor bruises.

- Parachute jumper jumped out of a plane from 3000 feet. His parachute never unfolded and he fell like a stone and finally landed on the hard ground - He survived, though I don't know what injuries he sustained, I suspect they were quite severe
