So which school of magic do you thnk is the best - considering which scholl(s) that you miss out on at the same time?

I've tried an abjurer - but losing illusion and transmutation was (in hindsight) too much of a penalty for 1 extra spell pr. lvl.

P.S. I also have the ****** manual that came without the spelllist - and the one on disc one is very user-unfriendly.

Actually if you have the manual... it tells you quite a bit.

I prefer to go with just Wizard. He can cast anything. I don`t specialize.
Never had a prob with that.

The manual that came with out the spell list? That`s wierd.. I bought mine off the shelf.. and it`s manual has all the spells. Havn`t looked on my disks... didn`t know there was a list there.

The European Ed. comes without spelllist and tables - they are onlt found on disc 1, which means that you can't access them when you want to.

I must admit, having just bought the European version, I was a little dissapointed to find the speels and tables only on disk. The format is a pain too - i.e. Better if grouped alphabetically WITHIN levels.

Wrestling with the decision to waste half my ink cartridge to print the manual!!! Expensive things those ink cartridges - expecially when you're unemployed!!!

I went with a standard Wizard myself (eventually!). Thought about taking a Diviner. Would force me to tackle the game without the safety net of mass conjuring. Couldn't sleep though, so I made him a non-specialist. I seem to rememebr Illusionist being a fairly good choice in BG1.

Another good choice is the sorcerer.Although with wizards, you can cast only the spells you have memorized, the sorcerer can cast what he picked 3 times at level one. The downside is that you cant learn from spells, but you can pick what spells you want every level up. Another bad thing is, say you have color spray, charm person, and magic missile, when u cast one of them, it takes away from the rest. But never choose any of the Summon monster unless it the last one.

I also think the manual is pretty bad in terms of categorizing the spells. But at least one other person agreed, and did a nice job of sorting them:

I suggest the regular, non-specialist wizard. You may not have the extra spell per level, but you're not limited in what can be learned. The penalties for specializing are much too strict, given the benefits (such as they are). There will be times in the game you'll wish you had "Spell X", only it's in a forbidden school. Remember this game is geared towards fighting, so you want every advantage possible.

I have a sorc as my main battle mage and a necromanncer/rogue (ratio 2:1 necro to rogue) I like the necro kit alot: animate dead, skull trap energy drain etc and havin the sorc you can afford to lose illusion with your secondary mage especially as she has a good hide ability. dont go conjurer tho evocation is everythin from magic missile to fireball my mate did it.. lol he also picked every monster summoning in the book from 1 thru 6 so far lmao

I like Diviner. They mostly only lose necromancy.
