I can vouchsafe that critters -can- and -do- spawn when the party is motionless and outside.
Earlier, I was reading the postings on here, and looked up at the other computer and saw my party being attacked by a group of failed mathematicians. (Did those guys take maths lessons from gully dwarves?)
The party had been standing still for about 20 mins earth-time.

Critters can also spawn while one is fighting, though I don't know if that counts as 'standing still'.
Last night, I had two triplets of Mountain Spiders spawn on me while I was fighting with the bunch of dragonflies that had appeared while I was battling off the wogurs* that had turned up to help the rattlings that had ambushed me while I was ...
The upside was that my 'party' was outside with the sole purpose of levelling (the Priest wanted to get the last couple of necessary Vine spells before Monking). The consequent XP was very nice.
The downside was that they very nearly didn't -get- the XP...

Melb_Wiz.

*What -is- a Wogur, anyway? Half the time they seem to be dogs of some form (Mastiff, etc) ... but the graphics remind me more of a Rodent Of Unusual Size.
"Wogurs Of Unusual Size? Nonsense. I don't think they - aaarrrggghhh..."

As long as the Lightning Sand and the Flame Spurt doesn't show up I'll be happy playing with Wogurs (WOUS)

This made me think of an old post that I dug up -- Saz starts it off with an amusing tale from atop the walls at Shurugeon Castle.

Gotta love it...
