Rule of thumb is to wait until your magic users are level 14 and have learned the higher level spells before changing them to another role. They can continue to learn spell from their previous role but only at half their level when they changed to the new role - so there is no advantage to changing asap.

Except...there's no such penalty with the Warlock. You can change your spellcasters to Warlock soon on...just realize they'll have to study 4 schools of magic rather than just 2! So plan to leave them at Warlock for a while.

Ah - thanks Saz - I obviously was mistaken on wizard to warlock - but it still sounds to me as though it would be worth working up some levels as a wizard before changing. The new class level increases will come quickly probably when they will be most useful!
