Don't you think that it took away from the game how a frighter can open locked doors and boxes.

no. not at all. why shouldn't a person with an Arnold-esq build and a battle axe be able to smash up a wooden chest?
Hell, I'm not exactly He-Man, but given a bat or an axe and some time I could reduce a dresser to firewood.

I agree with oldbittercraig. Since you are limited to yourself and a henchman in single player, it seems silly NOT to let other classes bash/destroy chests. Loot shouldn't be limited to Rogues only!

Then whats the point of a rogue/thief? I wonder if anyone has created just a straight solid rogue. I think it kinda sucks that rogues are pretty much only useful for multiclassing, they really arent built for melee, that cant cast spells unless from scrolls. The only difference is they have high stealth and they can pick locks?? And really thats no big deal either because any char class can open locked chests or doors and go stealth or gulp down a potion of invisibility. I was just thinking about making a straight rogue the other day too just to try it.

Lock picking is kinda important. Not all pc's can crash every chest.
Trap removal comes to mind. Trap setting is wonderful in ambushing your enemies. Pick pocket could be useful. That ungodly sneak attack bonus is pretty groovy (at 14, my henchmen Tomi does +7d6!) They are pretty cool characters to run as well.

I dont mind being able to bash open chests, they have damage resistance for the strong ones. What I do mind is that none of them seem to have elemental resistances. Any spell or weapon that does even 1 point of elemental damage can break chests and doors. Any PC can break a chest.
Also sucks that most of your summons and familiars/companions have high spot/search skills. They find the traps and hidden monsters for you. Rogue is convenient now instead of essential. |

I don't have much luck on bashing it seems. Only thing I successfully bashed was that throne thingy in the Beggars Nest Yuan-Ti room. Maybe it's my weapon, maybe it's my lack of strength? I find a lot of doors that are "barred from the other side" that I never can get into. Of course my main henchman is Bodysock and he CAN open a lot of things I cannot, but not those doors. doors that are barred cant be opened anyways. rogues have their ability for sneak attack which is ok if you into some shots getting in. but to me a rogue is yes a pretty useless char class considering my barb can deal 30-60 damage standard. even if i dont bash i got 15 and 15 points into open and disarm abilities. setting traps i didnt like cause for you to set traps you have to invest alot of points into trap setting. in BG2 you just laid them down and they worked.i feel a bard was given a better chance this time around and they took away from the rogues because to many char made to many styles of unbalanced rogue like char.seems everyone multi with rogues. so now they have created new and more exciting possibilities to work with.

I'm perfectly happy with the ability to bash open chests and doors. I would also accept them adding a percent chance that certain items will be destroyed when an item is bashed open. Potions and the like would be particularly vulnerable.
