So would it be beneficial at all to start as a fighter or other tank and convert to a mage at lvl 2? would the bonuses from that justify loosing a lvl 8 and 9 spell?

Personally I don't like Drizzt, the evil drow are so much more cool.

That depends on how you want to play your character. One possibility is to create a battle-mage by using the level of fighter for all the weapon and armor proficiencies, and then taking Still Spell so the battle-mage can use armor without the arcane failure penalty. That's one way of RP'ing, there are lots of others.

Of course, a level 20 mage won't need armor or weapons anyway, but it would make the earlier levels a little safer.

Whats wrong with regular elves? High, Gold, Moon and Forest?

Wood elfs are fun to play, especially since they tend to be more chaotic then the average high/gold elf.
However, Drow culture has fascinated me ever since I read the Dark Elf trilogy. Personally I find Drizzt a rather uninteresting and one dimensional character.

Torgul
chaotic-good
half-orc

1 level barbarian 19 levels shaman (read cleric)

Background:

When Torgul was just a lad he wanted nothing more than to be a fierce warrior (barbarian) like most of his kind. He was an inquisitive boy, always looking for something new to get into. He wanted adventure.

Torgul's father, Murgoth, was a powerful tribal shaman who wanted nothing more in life but to have his son follow his path. He prayed to Ineval daily for help in influencing young Torgul, but Torgul had other plans. (careful what you wish for)

Early one foggy morning, while the village lay asleep in their huts, a band of marauders attacked. They were intent on taking the women and children as slaves to be sold in the city for gold.

The fierce warriors of the tribe that Torgul admired so much grabbed their hulking axes and ran head-long into battle. Unfortunately for the brave warriors, the marauders had dealt with their kind before and they were ready. Out of nowhere a rain of arrows came from the sky. Cutting down almost all of the tribal warriors before they even had a chance to raise their mighty axes in battle.

Torgul wanted to join in they fray, but Murgoth told him to stay back. He stood and watched his father walk to the center of the camp and begin waving his arms and spouting incoherent words, he had never heard before. Just then, the ground in front of the advancing marauders seemed to open up. Vines sprang from the earth beneath the their feet and wrapped around them; holding them in place. Torgul was in awe. He had been told by his father how powerful their god, Ineval was, but he had never seen it first-hand.

Murgoth said something else Torgul didn't understand and the sky grew dark. Fire, lightning and acid rained from the sky above the marauders. They screamed in agony as their flesh was seared from their bones. The few remaining marauders fled in fear.

Relieved that the marauders had been beaten, Murgoth let down his guard. Just then, Torgul noticed a human figure emerge from the shadows like a ghost. He yelled to his father, but it was too late. The assassin had already plunged his dagger deep into Murgoth's spine and slipped back into the shadows from whence he came.

Torgul ran to his father only to find he had been mortally wounded. He lay there on the ground. His back had been ripped wide open. He clenched his dying father's hand to comfort him as he slipped away. His father was gone.

Trying desperately to fight back the tears, he noticed a light from the sky. It was a beautiful, bright light that seemed to shine from the heavens themselves.

Suddenly Murgoth's body rose off the ground and ascended into the sky. The dagger that had ended his life dropped as if there was nothing to hold it any longer; along with Murgoth's sword (remember he worshipped Ineval).

Torgul threw down his battle axe and picked up his father's sword. He had decided to give up on the dream of becoming a warrior. He now wanted to be like his father; a powerful shaman. He dropped to his knees and began to pray to Ineval for help in avenging his father's death.

A moment later he had thoughts he had never had before. He knew things he never knew and he could feel power surging through him, he had never before felt. He knew his prayers had been answered. He had been accepted by Ineval.

Picking up the dagger, he noticed it had the markings of a serpent wrapped around a human woman on the hilt and some symbols he couldn't make out..........yet. ( human letters).

Deciding that he would devote his life to ending the life of his father's assassin, he set off toward the human city.

You can only make the portrait look like a drow, not the in-game avatar.

I’m baffled that none of you had said it yet. Yea, you all know what I’m talking about....a halfling monk! I mean think of the possibilities with this kick @$$ combo. Imagine a short furry-footed fat man doing a roundhouse kick against a dragon or something. This guy is gonna do some serious damage =)
