ok as far as I can figure it... here's the quote: (I'm too lazy to type it)
"MUD stands for Multi-User Dungeon, Multi-User Domain, or Multi-User Dimension. Regardless of what it stands for, a MUD is an online environment where multiple users are logged on and interacting with one and other. On some MUDs you only interact with other players that are logged on, similar to an online chat system. On other MUDs you can also interact with a game world where you can explore, fight monsters, and collect treasure, either alone or in the company of other players that are logged on. On some MUDs, the environment itself can be changed and expanded by the players themselve. On others, you must play the game long enough to advance to a Wizard level at which time you can add new areas to the game. Allowing players to change and add to the MUD world itself is one of the unique features that make MUDs so unique and fun. Every MUD you visit will be different in subtle or dramatic ways." It's a role-playing program not a chatroom (well you CAN talk to other people but they are role-playing too) there's lots of them out there..

Most MUDs can be viewed as text-only rpg's without a fixed storyline. Things such as spells, monsters, xp-tables and rooms are determined in advance, then when you create a new character you make a selection from a bunch different races, classes etc., the usual, which determines your character abilities for the rest of the game. You do level up if you kill enough monsters and get to distribute more points. You move about the world going from room to room with simple commandos like North Up Kill and Rest
The above is the basic MUD. You also have variations in which you can get XP by doing quests in addition to killing, and in some MUDs quests are actually the main source of experience. Picking a good MUD is mainly a matter of trying out until you find one with a world and quest amount and difficulty you're happy with. Friendly players help a lot too. Additionally, there is something called the MUSH. In a MUSH you only have fixed rooms and character descriptions, with no monsters, spells or experience at all. This iscloser to a chat program, in that you and the other players have to create all the action. You don't buy a drink, but you say *example* "Rikard steps up to the barkeep and orders a mug of ale", to which the barkeep replies "Adam stops cleaning the counter and fills one of the wooden mugs" "Here you go, that'll be three coppers" after which you type "Thank you" "Rikard empties the mug and hands the barkeep a silver" "Get me a refill and keep the change"... Personally, I think a MUSH is a lot more fun as you interact more with the other players. On the other hand, such a game is more easily ruined by another, less friendly, player. Here too, you just have to find the kind of players you want to play with. I'm (still) working on a MUD of my own with some friends, so I have to check out the competition |

I played Hidden Worlds MUD for a period of well over 8 years. I can honestly say that I have had some of my most fun times ever online playing that game. There's a lot to be said for text-only based adventures which force you to make up the pictures in your own mind. It's incredibly addictive, and a lot of fun. Some things which might take you a little while to get used to:
1) You need to be able to skim read really damn fast 2) Your typing skills must be pretty polished 3) A good attitude and sense of cameraderie (much like all on here!) 4) A game which has a good progression level and a player base which will offer newbies assistance. Over the years, the players on Hidden Worlds have dwindled from 100 online at the same time to more like under 10-20 but I can definitely vouch for it as one of the best, well-maintained and old school muds out there. If you're interested telnet to hw.cc.colorado.edu 4000 and create yourself a character. I'm more than open to helping you via email with basic character generation and other assistance. I play Aldric on the mud, but VERY very rarely these days..

I use Fire Client. You can do a search for it over at tucows, and once it's installed it's pretty straightforward. Just go to 'new' in the menubar and select one from the list of muds/mushes. Elendor is a nice MUSH, a suitable MUD for learning the basics might be Mirkwood. It comes equipped fully with friendly members, at most hours anyway.
The first command you should learn is 'CHAT' |
