You had to get Mel started on a language topic didn't you? We will now never hear the end of Mel's vast knowledge on languages...
My favourite language is Hungarian - it WAS my first language, but to be brutally honest I probably speak better english now so I can say Hungarian in this topic Those that don't know it are missing out on some great sayings, word-play and cultural humour so nyah! You're just miffed because Hungarian is so bloody difficult no one bothers to learn it or even mention it as a favourite. Nah, in fact you should teach me some phrases some day |

This is how you end up with words like: "legeslegmegszentségtelenithetetlenebbeiteknek" which is perfectly correct grammatically and is the longest word I know Yes I can pronounce it, but not when drunk You'll also be pleased to hear that the core of that word is "szent" meaning sacred/holy. hmmm I digress.... Did I mention I also like German a bit? It's the only other language I have some knowledge of. Hmm if you're interested in Hungarian stuff Mel, check out some of the books by the woman on this site: http://www-jcsu.jesus.cam.ac.uk/~da209/ardo/ Especially the one about "How To Be A European" it's really funny and tells you about the people and culture in Hungary. It's an intermingling of the gaelic languages that shifts in dialect constantly. There is no true establishment like there is for say, the Irish language.
I agree with Mouse. Come on you celts! [ 05-21-2003, 02:28 PM: Message edited by: SpiritWarrior ]

Maybe I *should* read up on Hungarian a bit... I've read some historical (i.e. non-fiction, non-dramatized) account of Erzsebet Bathory's life, and I do think many Hungarian names are quite cool (yours included!) but that's about all I know. SpiritWarrior, no idea what you're trying to say but Scottish Gaelic IS a separate language. Just because a language has dialects or regional variety doesn't mean it's not a language (SG is divided roughly into Southern and Northern dialects). It's distinct from Irish Gaelic for several reasons, one being the fact that they don't have the same amount of noun cases and another that Scottish Gaelic incorporated Norse and English loanwords that aren't there in Irish Gaelic. What they taught us in school was that SG was shaded by a myriad of other gaelic languages like all are but that this was everchanging much like Tex-Mex and therefore is not accepted as one of the base gaelic languages.

I studied Russian for about a dozen years, so I'll list it as a 'favorite'. I have some German as well, and love it! Keep thinking I'll find a class or two to continue my German studies but so far we haven't re-instated it at the Univ. yet.
I tried Finnish once and loved it, but I'll admit, it's too dang complicated for me to seriously learn and use now.
