Yes, non-bow ranged weapons get the strength bonus, whereas bows do not. The value of bows is in attacks per round, range, and variety and prevalence of magical ammunition.

You may be able to get 4 stars in a ranged weapon if you take some of the same proficiencies with both classes of a DC character. I'm not sure if the game effects top out at three stars and the fourth is merely cosmetic. Might have to do some testing.

Is the only weapons that rely on DX bows?
It seems as if I write this a lot: Good to know!

Nope. All ranged weapons get a + to hit (but not a + to damage) from high dex. I'm quite sure that non-bow weapons get the + to hit from strength, as well, so a sling (or whatever) should have a combined + to hit from dex and str. An easy way to check that is to look at the modified Thaco (in brackets) of a new character.

I must say that I really didn't think that darts get the strength bonus. I often have a fighter armed with darts and while I've seen 5 damage in a hit, I'm quite sure I haven't seen 9 (or whatever it would have to be with proficiency AND strength damage). If only slings get the strength bonus, my analysis would clearly be very wrong, and I'd have to re-evaluate my opinion of slings. I usually just have clerics use them, and they usually don't have exceptional strength.

Hmmm. I'll have to test a bit; I don't often use darts, so I haven't noticed that effect. On second thought, I have thought that thrown weapons in IWD don't do as much damage as they should (primarily axe). I wonder if the Str bonus is not added to thrown weapons?

I'm confused.

I do know that the 2nd ed. PnP rules call for the addition of str and dex modifiers to thrown weapons. I can't say for certain that IWD uses the exact same formula.

Question Mark

Normally, ranged weapons won't get any bonuses due to strength, unless they specifically say that they do.

Yes, it is always fun to test out new weapons and tactics by having your party members beat each other senseless.

JrKASperov,

I would be inclined to agree with ister and Azred, that STR does not affect damage from sling. However, the experiments that I performed this last weekend show fairly conclusively that the three of us are wrong, and that you are correct.

Yes, Azred, that is exactly the technique I used: Lots of screaming from my party members as they squared off in 3 separate 1V1 matches and pelted each other to death in front of Pomab's Emporium, whilst children poked at a squirrel only yards away.

Lots of surprises for me came out the the testing. As said before, I will post results in a separate thread, when I can get around to it (hopefully by COB, tomorrow).

this is interresting! I thought that IWD was old enough to have all the details figured out, but apperantly not!
How nice that some mystery still remains!

There are always mysteries, Kitiara. For example, on Burial Isle (in HoW expansion) the Drowned Dead will go around Young Ned to attack you, even if one of your cowardly party members hides behind him. Is he some sort of secret high priest who is protected from undead or what?
