I played last night with a new party (am going through the major classes' stronghold quests), and in the middle of the Trademeet quest, Valygar killed a troll with his family blade.
Now, assuming that other things out there like Gnasher work the same way... if it's a bug, it's a neat, and even vaguely pseudoplausible one... although fortunately one that won't autoexploit very often....

Yeah, I think it has been reported before. (I've even heard stories about trolls dying from massive amounts normal damage dealt instantaneously).
Though I can clearly see it's merits I am always a bit on guard to that Gnasher thing. Especially because it's continous damage has a way of screwing up scripts.

Trolls can be killed by fire, acid and poison. Valygars family blade deals poison damage, you even get that "Poison" combat message, so nothing odd about that, besides the fact that the poison is described as "bleeding" damage.
The Gnasher's special splinter effect does piercing damage however, and should not be able to kill Trolls.

Well, "The Troll Prinipal" is that when you knock a troll down all that happens is it's resistances increase. So therefore if you can get something past it's resistances, you're alright. I've managed to kill trolls before with my Blade of Roses and Equaliser (Not sure which one, I dual wield). I assume this is because I do the damage to it when it falls down, but just before it's extra resistances kick in.
I assume my "Troll Principal" is right, I've never really had the chance to test it, other than my miraculous kills with my long swords. |

On a related note, I have even seen the Corthala Family Blade kill Gaseous Forms. Weirdness! (I suppose that the only way to pull that off is to get in the last hit right before the Djinni goes Gaseous. The Gas form is immune to Poison, but since the Poison was applied to the Djinni form, it still gets through and does damage. Or something like that.)
