With the spell (I think it's called Holy Smite), or indeed any spell which attacks evil within an x-foot radius...One of my characters is evil, so if he was in the area of smite, would he be smote?

Yes. The spell affects evil beings, so you're character is going to get hurt. But, if you have a lot of hit points, it might be worth it. Use the evil character as a decoy to gather enemies in one area, then cast the spell on him. I do the same thing with fireballs.
