Generally when players meet this character they are not capable of killing him and it is a quick lesson to be cautious. On replaying the game (with the same characters) he's easy to take out but doing so doesn't change the game.

You have to be wicked fast, but he can be killed. I was wondering if Gareth still dies. I guess so, too bad. That is what I would call being a hero, killing the assassin and saving Gareth (even though he is kind of a blowhard).

Yes, Gareth still dies.
Grue Morde is supposed to be the assassin who kills Gareth, not this serpent guy. *

Hmmm... I always thought the Traveler (Serpent Guy) at the beginning was Grue Morde, and we just didn't know it at the time...it would seem logical, since he seems to recognize the party when you encounter him again outside of Brimloch Roon.

Saz - remember that you find and kill Grue Morde just after you descend from the Dragon Spire on the way to Brimloch Roon. He looks like almost every other highland rogue!

Wyv not trying to be an insolent brat, but....

"On the way to the crypt you will meet the mysterious Stranger. Talk with him, but do not attempt to detain him-you cannot prevent fate, for he is the assassin sent to kill Gareth."

From page 99 of the Tome of Many Errors.

Hmmmm.

I thought he was one of scabbans associates, the ones who leave him before they are consumed by the disease as he explains in the crypt.

Oh, oh, oh, Wyvern....that's not Grue Morde, that's Bramhar the Bandito that Lord Barrenhawk wants you to kill.

Grue Morde looks just like Tevik Teporn and the "Stranger" at the beginning...he's one of the snake cult.

I've run into BOTH of those villains at the same time...they're pretty much right in the same place, north of the spire. Talk about confusing!

Sazerac

P.S. FanPyre, those are the ones in the Sacred Toadem..the ones Shinwiki wants you to kill, AFAIK.
