I bought a scanner yesterday, and while installing it I realized what a thick layer of dust had accumulated on every level of my computer desk. Further, my printer which is on the bottom shelf was covered. I then noticed the top of my CPU, moniter, and cable modem, and they are all likewise covered. I'm pretty sure it was a fire hazard

How could I sit at that machine everyday and not notice how disguisting dirty it was? I'm actually a fairly "neat"person, but I'm much more of a "everything in it's place" person, than a "duster and mopper".

Check on your fire hazard right now! Remember, dust is the number one enemy of electronics, so the computer you save could be your own.

Okay, I've collected all the dust in the house and dumped it on top of my computer. Let's hope this works and I will finally get a valid excuse for buying a new one

Also you might want to pull the outer case off and get all the dust out of the inside. The fan blows a lot of it in there. One of those spray duster-cans work great

That's good point. If you've never opened the case on your computer, you will be amazed at the dust after even a short period of time. For those who are afraid of opening the case - don't be! Turn it off, unplug it and remove the cover. Just don't touch anything you don't understand, then blow the dust out with canned air like LoA says.

Oh dear

Does everyone realise that it isn't just normal household dust that buggers up PCs. 20 a day smokers cause nicotine that sticks to everything, then there are the cats - 3 of them who shed constantly. I daren't take my case off anymore. Sure that there are chain smoking kittens gestating inside there.

Even more scarily, Pebbles (fat white cat) sleeps on top of my monitor, right over the vents that blow warm air over her huge tummy. God, I dread to think how furry my monitor inards are. Best I never get to find out really

Hey, I'm a bachelor and my logic says:

How are you supposed to have houseplants if you don't let some top soil form?

Won't it all get rather messy when you try to water them, Sir Kenyth?

Oh man, same here.. I have to dust 2 times a week, because our room has a ceiling fan, and it really makes it worse, but I need it. I have a cat too, so there is a LOT of cat hair everywhere

If you feel comfortable doing so, open up your PC and use some compressed air and blow all the dust out of the PC.. it gets BAD inside too.. I even open up the power supply and clean it out--be VERY careful, I don't recommend doing that. it's dangerous!
