theyre both good depending on what it is your playing
i wouldnt want a first person shooter turn based for instance (quake type)
and i wouldnt want a strategic conquest game to be real time (moo type)

but usually a first time shooter is put in a real time game, and a strategic conquest game is also usually put in a turn based game.i just cant imagine why a game company would put a strategy game in a real time game.

How the heck can you have a turn based shooter??? Starcraft wouldn't be the same turn based.

Turn based is real strategy. Real Time is just click faster to win. Think about it.

I much prefer turn based, especially for RPG's where you are running multiple characters, with different action options for each. Real time should be for games like Freelancer and Mechwarrior. I know folks who won't play anything that isn't turn based.

I agree with Masklinn.

Real time is great for the time in between fights; you are just telling people to move around, pick up stuff, etc. But turn based is the best when you are controlling mulitple characters in a combat. Let's face it, how many people played any of the Baldur's Gate games without hitting pause to give commands to your party? Once you hit pause, give commands, and they do the commands once you unpause, it is a rudimentary version of the turn based system in action. I loved playing the original Dune game (I believe Sega Genesis, if I remember right), but it was also annoying that all commands were given in real time. The computer could have all of his men move all at once, while I was stuck rushing around the map giving commands, all the while his guys moving around and attacking my guys. I'd be off on another part of the map trying to organize my people, then I would hear "base under attack." Go back, and he's got like 5 units there pounding on my base. Once I had my guys organized, and had enough forces in place to guard my stuff, then I could concentrate on my attacking force, and could keep a strong enough tabs on things to fight in real time. There's no way I would even think of playing BG2 without hitting pause at least a couple of times in the combat.

Personally, I prefer turned based, especially considering that is what I grew up with (I'll date myself by throwing out Bard's Tale and the original Pool of Radiance on my Commodore 64...). Gives you time to think and prepare strategy. That's why I'm looking forward to Temple of Elemental Evil.
