While chatting with my sister this morning, I had an idea to convert my virtual garage sale to an auction, but I don't know how, or if I can, write a bid button instead of the standard PayPal buy it button.

I've got a list of stuff that I'd like to try and get off of, but I can't afford to keep paying ebay for stuff that doesn't sell. I figured if I could make my own auction, I could leave the stuff up for as long as it takes, but I have no idea how to go about it, or if the package that I can afford for my site right now would even support it. Any suggestions?

Well I don't think you can do it with simple html, but with Php or something similar you could probably whip something up. What did you have in mind, an auction exactly like on ebay or more like a guestbook where those interested post a bid and an email adress? If you want the latter I could probably help you out a bit.

Yeah HTML is just a markup language for displaying content. Javascript runs on users' browsers and can take input to use in a script. But to actually take input and store it somewhere you need a SERVER SIDE script like ASP or PHP or JSP. Then you can either store information in a database (so then you'd need to learn the interface to the database) or in a text file.

but to get good enough in a server side scripting language, from scratch, to write an auction application, is a bit of a steep learning curve, as I take it you haven't done something like this before. I wrote a book auctioning site in ASP.NET a few years ago for a uni project and that took a couple of weeks even though I'd had some experience before

ASP isn't too hard to get the hang of, and databases are relatively easy. I'd recommend trying it, but you'd need to get a good tutorial first and learn the language. Something to think about though; it must get more hits on ebay than it would on your site, no? So is it worth the effort of learning the language if it might be up there for months?

^^yeah it's very easy for a programmer's mind. But not easy at all for a non-programmer, did you think of that?

I have some experience with computers, I dabbled in computer sciences while I was in college, but the computers then were not much more than complex adding machines. I think the only language I ever looked at was BASIC. However, I am pretty intuitive, and am far from dumb, so I'll have a look around to see what I can find. Who knows, maybe I'll just have to ask for specific stuff, if anything. Thanks for the advice so far, and the correction on what I need to know. Already learned something new, and haven't gotten started good yet.

Well for an ASP and ASP database interface (ADO) tutorial look here, that's where I learnt from:
