Chimaster,
I think that you have to do the serpent temple to get an item that you need at Anaphas's tomb.

Yeh, the puzzles can be a little drawn out but the worst thing is getting poisoned all the time.

ur very welcome chi master!
2 tell u the truth...........i actually went into the serpent temple WITHOUT getting the cure poison spell!!!! haha n wow did i really yank my hair out when al my characters got poisoned in the 1st 5 mins......i was like this !
i dun know if u r aware of this but, u can either choose 2 join the serpent cult n pay the priests money when they ask 4 it or kill every1 inside the temple 4 xp n money. if u join the serpent cult, your reward is getting the Snakeskin trait when u r almost at the end of the temple. for killing every1 inside, your reward is a tremendous amt. of xp, money n items (especially the serpent coins required for the pawn shop quest) but u dun get the snakeskin trait when u finish the temple......
so it's ur choice 2 either play along or hack & slash ur way through.

Actually, you can get the trait whether you've paid off the serpent priests along the way or you've sliced them into Gael Serran Sushi. Elyssia will offer it to you in either case once you get to her spot in the ceremonial chamber.

I started paying off the priests, and it worked fairly well... until one dowry priest got mad that I was too far away to pay him his money. Then they all went after me, which created a big batch of XP.

One plus to paying off the priests -- you can trade with them for serpent coins, and they'll almost always have them. They don't always drop them when you send them to meet Mother Xydusa.
