Likely that has a lot to do with it, pipes across the big pond are usually congested. Maybe you should do a little benchmarking with local sites and see how it stacks up.

1.6 Mbit down/92 Kbit Up at the moment.

This is on Cable. I've seen it drop to modem speed at peek trafic times.

Memsy ... on these insane speeds we Yanks have .... you know Americans, everything HAS to be bigger, faster, louder !

Seriously though, the best way to determine your "speed" is between you and your provider. DSL is "gauranteed" bandwidth, cable isn't. Once you leave your provider's network, all bets are off, cuz then you deal with the distant end's bandwidth as well. Plus, for everone outside of North America trying to connect to Continental US sites, there are only so many pipes, and they aren't as interconnected as the ones Stateside. You would see better rates locally though, and we'd have the "slower" connect times.

2983 Kbps here..
(I would have scored more, because of bandwidth being used by everyone here)

EDIT-- We have 3Mb/768KB here.

I've heard that TMnet is providing Streamyx service to it's customer. check the link. however currently they are testing it on some selected phone numbers. maybe your phone number is the lucky one?
Isn't this a type of broadband?

Cos that needs copper wires... and my damned new-fangled apartment has fibre-optic... (which are supposed to be faster... how does that work?)

"38.6 kilobits per second

1MB file download 3.6 minutes

Compared to all connection types worldwide, yours is poor"

This is on my wife's 56k.

I'm scared to try my 33.6...
