Hold it now! We need a sizable force in South Korea! Technically, we're still at war. We're the only thing keeping these guys from swallowing up South Korea! As it stands, they still see occasional small arms action on the DMZ!
Most of the military people I've talked to (USAF officers) the consinous (SP?) is we're really keeping the south from going North

If we pull out of south Korea, do we give anyone the maps that show where our million + landmines are? This minefield is the reason the US has not signed the thing against the use of landmines...we wanted an exception made for this one area...and the Anti-mine people rejected the idea of any exceptions at all.

Those Land Mines are pretty much what keep the peace..that and snipers picking off anyone who tries to remove the mines.

In no way do we want to close all the bases in Germany. Like was stated in the article, base closing is a one way street. We may need those bases again in the very near future.

umm for what? Germany is reunified now and is quite capable of taking care of itself. We would be moving our bases into Romania and Bulgaria ...CLOSER to the current political hot spots.

Yes I never understood why there still are US forces in Germany. I doubt Russia will invade. Does it have something to do with NATO unity? But wouldn´t it be better to put new bases IN the political hotspots? Not so much to have soldiers near but to send a message. And not only US soldiers.

The problem is Willow, you can't put a base IN the hotspot, You want your base of operations to be secure and a somewhat safe staging area, the governments of those middle eastern nations tell us they want us there, but then turn around and back the factions that are bitching about us "infidels" desecrating their holy soil....it's jst too darn messy there to try and keep our bases there. So we are pulling out of Saudi Arabia, and other Middle Eastern states that really do not support our presence.

MagiK, I know about the minefield (interesting thread on another forum) but can't the ROK's take care of it? It is, after all their country. If the North seriously invaded SK, our guys wouldn't last long, at all.

Noo? Sorry couldn´t help it. But Kuwait isn´t all that anti-US are they? Or has that changed as well? And I know this would raise a living *insert bad word here if you like* but Israel is an option. Of course that would probably destabilise the entire region even more. What you could do is to "rename" the US forces to the UN forces.

Edit: typos.
