walking silently

How important is it for a thief to be able to walk silently? Doesn't hide in shadows do the same job only better, concealing them from view as well?

I am not 100% sure but i think that a thiefs stealth pecentage is based on both those skills.
For example having 80% MS and 60% HS gives you atotal of 70% stealth.
Could be wrong though...

I believe it also determines how fast an enemy's gonna notice you, if you hide in shadows. For instance, mages might cast true sight when they hear you. (not sure though)

yup, it should work like that, but unfortunatley the scripting in infinity is just not up to the job.
