Joining a relatively high number of battles raises your skills relative to your level. I just beat the Seventh Bough critters at only lev 7-8. I have a party of seven (with Vi). The monsters were easier and fewer than I have ever seen! The Rapax and Oak spirits were defeated on first attempt (I use a certain strategy on the wood guys there that always seems to work). In past games, I waited til level 12 or higher. It was a tough battle. I suspected this thing about skills but thought it was too slow. Some people may not have patience for it, but take on as many battles as you can early to have a better chance at the monsters on your level. Not just the quest related big ones, do the minor ones, too. My $0.02

yes, I prefer to raise my skill by battling with critters in road to arnika. the critters there is easy.
