To quote Ferris Bueller: I did have a test today. That wasn't bullshit. It's on European socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European, I don't plan on being European, so who gives a crap if they're socialist? They could be fascist anarchists - that still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. Not that I condone fascism, or any ism for that matter. Isms in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an ism - he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon: "I don't believe in Beatles - I just believe in me". A good point there. Of course, he was the Walrus. I could be the Walrus - I'd still have to bum rides off of people.

OK whatever kind of communism that is, it sure isn't Cuban Communism...

Cuban Communism's goals work like this:

1: Fidel is president

2: Fidel will never die

3: Fidel will normally lie to the press to gain attention (hey if Clone-Aid did it so can we!)

4: Lets live in a paradise where we chop down rare trees to save feral cats, prostitution is legal, and there aren't any Wal-Marts!

5: Oh yeah, and smoke Cigars until the air becomes a toxic cloud which eats away the atmosphere and kills us all...

6: Stop speaking English, Portugeese is the only alternative to Spanish...

7: Eat with both your hands on the table! No Napkins either!

8: Pretend your cattle are "Super Cows" and that their milk cures cancer and aids

9: Drive cars from the 1950s, anything newer isn't scientifically fathomable.

Hmm, and here I was thinking that it was Paul who had been the Walrus all along...

Apparently the first state to become a communist, according to Karl Marx, was Britain (it was the industrial giant at the time). The Russians had Menshiviks and Bolsheviks, not true communism.

Some interesting goals there, MagiK!

Marx theorized that British-style industrialization was what was needed to create the great communist society. Marx vehemently exclaimed that in order for communism to work the revolution must take place in an industrialized country capable of sustained production en-mass. So far, absolutely no so-called 'communist' revolutions have taken place in such a country. All communist revolutions have taken place in countries with largely agrarian-based economies.
Now, after said revolutions took place (think Russia and China as the big examples), it was up to the newfound governments to squeeze centuries worth of industrialization (setting up mining networks, factories, petrol refining facilities, you name it) into the space of a few decades. Lets not forget how awful the conditions were for early industrial cities in Britain and America (think London, New York, Chicago), now imagine trying to fit that process (which took from the late 1700s through to the early/mid 1900s) into the space of 30 years or so (and you HAVE to do it that fast for your own survival because all industrialized capitalist nations on Earth want to cut your throat and get rid of you at the earliest opportunity). Basically what you end up with is Stalinism: the brutally-controlled, ultra-repressive, ultra-totalitarian system of government and production where no deviation from the government's will is tolerated. 'The West' went through the exact same process, only slightly watered down as industrialization was spread over a larger timeframe. 19th century ultra-capitalist Britain and America were NOT nice places to live, that must never be forgotten! Too often is capitalism shown as the road to prosperity while communism is denegrated as fantasy. In reality it is merciless human exploitation that is the real enemy, not the system of productive ownership.

Communism does work, and communism will work. The empowerment and education of the working class has already begun, the age of separation between rich and poor is in it's twilight years. The extinction of class itself is inevitable.

Yeah, and the democrats will win the next election. No true communism has ever worked, even on the smallest scale. Talk about the dustbin of history!

Sorry Hierophant....I've lived in Russia back when it was the USSR. Communism was a major flop there because of human nature. Everyone was 'guaranteed' health care but what happened was those who would pay MORE got better care than those who took the system at face value and expected decent quality care. argh..don't even get me started.... I'm at work and don't have time for that now....I'll just say, that I am personally convinced after years of study and living in a so called 'communist' country, that it's not a workable plan and human nature being what it is, it's a utopian dream at best, a horrid nightmare at worst.

I doubt there ever *was* real communism in the USSR, though... It was more a dictatorship abusing the name of communism.

I don't think there really CAN be a 'real' communist state. Too much power, greed, corruption. Those who don't have it, still want it and those who THINK they won't if they get this 'utopia' find they really don't have the perfect place because they or someone else still want the 'perks' that they don't want to share.
