after returning the final piece of the recipe to aribeth and going through the portal to hunt down Desther(spelling?), i went straight to his hold thinking i could do that and then the cave on the other side of the map afterwards. I killed off the traitor and was instead sent straight to port llast, am i able to back track to this cave on one of the roads?

I do not believe so, no. I'm pretty sure you cannot return to the place where Desther fled to. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain.

The cave was simply an alternate route into the Hold. You can't backtrack to areas in chapters past simply because of the way the modules are built.

Nothing special... It's randomly-spawned good treasure, which is special for Chapter One, but you'll find new and better things soon enough in the coming chapters.

You didn't miss much. Barreling straight through the front door gets you all that undead XP. If you went to the basement inside the temple, you picked up most of the dialogues and interesting stuff.

Oh, there was this locked chest in the basement that I could not open. Did I miss much?

I had no idea how that one worked, so I opened the tileset. You missed out on some high-quality randomly spawned treasure... Valuable perhaps, but nothing unique.
