Rap/Popular Radio Music Joke

I heard a joke on Saturday Night Live last night about some currently-popular rap songs, and I thought you guys might find it funny, particularly if you're familiar with the music. I do not have a direct quote, so I'll restate the joke, a SNL News piece, as best I remember it:

In response to the popular Outkast song "Hey-Ya," Polariod released an announcement that you should not "shake it like a Polaroid picture" as this may inhibit proper development of Polaroid photos. In a related story, Bacardi asks that you drink responsibly and do not "drink Bacardi like it's your birthday."

*not sure if Mel is sincere* Not a huge Outkast fan here, I stick to the true hard core rap most of the time, not the commercialised stuff unless it's really good

But I love all the metaphors they use. Xzibit uses some funny metaphors and similes. "But all that's irrelavent, it's like tryina turn a whore celebant"

"Attract bitches like flies to shit" lol

"We're permanently on your backs like tats"

Coolio: "You better chill cos I've been workin on my mojo, make your crew disappear like Dorothy and Toto" LOL!

"Get your ass rolled up like a rolo"

Why wouldn't I be sincere, Uncle Vask? I think my tastes are broader than you might think. [img]tongue.gif[/img] I wouldn't call Outkast commercialised rap though...
I'm not a huge fan either, but I liked most of their songs so far, they sound fresh and different.

To follow up, Outkast is redefining what rap is. The new double album is part soul, part tongue-in-cheek parody of older music, part rap, and all good.

I note no one seems to get the 50 cent reference.

And Vaskez, I've been a rap fan and going to concerts since the days of Too Short, NWA, and Public Enemy. I don't know what you mean by "noncommercial" and "hard core" as opposed to what's out there now. Is Eminem hard core? Probably, it don't get much more hard core that talking about raping your mother or murdering your wife. But, he's certainly commercial. Is 50 Cent hard core? I mean he WAS a real gangsta and he DID take a few bullets -- but he's also certainly commercial and he's definately trying to make music accessible to the mainstream. Let's not forget that every every every rapper makes his music to sell to people.

Yeah Timber, I've been listening to rap since NWA days too (well ok just after). To be honest I use the term hard-core in different ways at different times. Here I mean the type of rap that is made primarily to further the art-form and/or to send a message/get the rapper's thoughts out there NOT the type that is just made to make money/get famous. There are some songs which are both and Eminem has a good number of those I admit, but many times, when trying to make a commercial song, it doesn't have as much "pure rap" value IMO e.g. Xzibit - X, catchy song, popular, commercialised, not really a good "hard-core" rap song. I don't mean hard-core like rough lyrics - that sort of hard-core is probably more appreciated by 13 year-olds
