Just for the heck of it...

I'm with two fighters at the moment, but love the Paladin's abilities and that "special sword", so I came up with a Pseudo Paladin for those interested in creating one instead of the Paladin:

Human Fighter {neutral good}
Large Sword 1_1_3_6_9
Mace 1_12_15_18_21
Missile 1_24_27_30

This allows for best early swords and a skeleton thumper [mace] (weak at first, but deadly later.) Also; allows for challenge and fun development with the otherwise "boring" fighter.

***Item Spoilers Ahead***
.
.
.
.
.
Final weapons (I won't elaborate much here - but listing basic damage range):
[damage_THAC0_speed] range
Long Sword of Action +4 [4_4_4] 5-12 {+1 attack, +1 AC)
Scimitar +3: Frostbrand [3_3_2] 4-11 {50% fire}
Flaming Long Sword +2 [2_2_4] 3-10 {trolls}
Morning Star +4: Defender [4_4_6] 6-12 {+2 AC, 15% Magic}
Edley's Sling [2_3_4] 4-7 {keep shield on}

Protection: this is what makes a Pseudo Paladin a ~Paladin:
Armor: Umber Hulk Plate
Shield: Mystery of the Dead
Cloak: Wailing of Virgins
Helm: Blessed Helm of Lathander
Girdle: Shimmering Sash
Gauntlets: Gauntlets of Weapon Skill
Boots: Boots of the North
Amulet: Black Wolf Talisman
Ring 1: Ring of Free Action
Ring 2: Ring of Protection +2

1. Allows for (18 DEX):
Basic AC: -14
Effective AC:
Crushing -18
Piercing -18
Slashing -20*
Missile -19
*Umber Hulk Plate -4 for Slashing
-Now add the priest's and mage's defensive spells...

2. You get an overall -3 Save and -4 for Breath

3. 10 extra hit points

4. 60% cold resistance

5. Immune:
a. Finger of Death
b. Power Word: Kill
c. Emotion: Hopelessness
d. Symbol of Hopelessness
e. All Fear-Based Effects

6. Spells 1/day:
a. Cloak of Fear
b. Cure Moderate Wounds
c. Neutralize Poison
d. Remove Paralysis

Notes:
i. I have another fighter to think about, so a careful balance is needed (I gave the other fighter the Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise since he is not as defensive in the AC department (although more resistant to attacks - sneaky, I am.)

ii. It is obviously a slow build until you finally get that damn wonderful virgin cloak -- but then you're set once you get it! A Pseudo Paladin.

Even if I am playing a Paladin, I'll switch to that Long Sword of Action... it's better than the Avenger!

Totally agree, I was just talking about the very same sword in another active discussion re: ranged weapons, and IMHO it has gotta be the best sword for dishing out damage espescially when hasted( but not by the pesky spell preferably)

LSoA +4 and Haste:

Yes; you can create a sword specialist by way of a Gnome and use "The Helm", and make your other fighter the axe specialist, but I like the first male pic of the "Gnome" / "Dwarf" looking guy holding the Axe -- so he's my axe specialist. They do have a perfect pic for a female Gnome sword specialist: it's the first one too, I think.

But I like the pic of the lady fighter with the sword and shield for my sword fighter, so...

Think about this though:
You can haste the axe fighter to make him team up with the LSoA +4 fighter and really tear the enemy apart! Yea...teamwork.

Besides, hasting the dude with the Throwing Axe +2 is kind of cool [no side effect with that helm.]

DE5 hint about that Throwing Axe +2:
.

.
.
.
Yxunomei + Helm + Throwing Axe +2 + Gauntlets of Weapon Skill + Haste = dead real fast - even in HoF mode.
