My choice of wood is typically walnut....

LoneStarDawg,

I have recently been spending a lot of time with Maple for the past 4 years but am currently itching to get into Walnut and Cherry. I'm also toying with the thought of working some of the exotics like BuaBunga (sp?), CocoBola (sp?) Lacewood, Zebrawood, Rosewood, and Teak.

Maple is a very unforgiving wood to work due to its density and hardness (two of the reasons I would like to work something else). What is Walnut like?

On a related note, what finishes do you like?

OOOOOHHHHH exotics.... I want. Have you thought about Koa? AMAZING coloring...

Walnut is a bit easier to work than maple, but is still a bit unforgiving. Careful and slow does it...

I love the look of wood, so I still am the old school when it comes to finishes. Mink (or linseed) oil hand-rubbed in, then a clear coat of WAX (yes, I know many folks don't use the wax anymore, but I cut mine with oil, and I LOVE the shine I get after all the work) MAJOR hand-rubbing, followed by a hand buffer...

man, I'm feeling the need to watch Tim the Tool Man Taylor !!! GRUNT GRUNT !!

Since you are all talking about wood, isn't there some sort of wood called Ebony?

Yup...
Black, through and through. Brilliant luster when polished. Absolutely beautiful. The black keys of pianos are made from it, and certain parts of the violin family (tailstocks, usually)

EXTREMELY...

It's very dense, and hard. Weapon-grade hard...

Larry, that's cool.
I love building stuff, although I usually get the parts cut to size and sanded (no garden/garage to do that kind of thing in) then assemble and finish it myself. Very satisfying.
I have 5 pine bookshelves finished with beeswax, a beautiful honey colour with a lovely grain. Lots of knots. I like knots.

No, I hadn't considered Koa at all. But maybe I should take a closer look next time I'm at the lumber yard.

Linseed Oil and Wax. Wow, you're a purist, aren't you?

On my current project I'm using an Non-Grain Raising Dye (an analine dye disolved in solvent) with Pre-Catalyzed Lacquer (sets up like baked enamel - much more durable than Polyurethane).

I wanna build something out of Ebony, I like black, I wonder what I should build(Once I get the cash to actually acquire some Ebony, or I find an Ebony tree and cuts it down.)?
