As this is being aired in South Africa, where children are routinely faced with the deaths of parents, family members, and friends from HIV/AIDS, this topic is both timely and appropriate. This isn't something that just affects "other people" in that community, it is epidemic. It has a dramatic and horrifying impact on these children, and any way to get information to them on how to live with this terrifying and stigmatizing disease is a good effort.

Glad to see that I am not alone with my opinion

Its a good thing that the muppet is being shown as having high selfsteem, showing that you can live on even if you have hiv.

Absynthe(hey is that drink really as strong as they say?) mentioned some good points.

I can agree with the desire to want to educate children and/or calm their uncertainties and fears. However, suppose a child has seen this show--that muppet--and her mother has contracted HIV. If that child falls down and skins her knee and mommy wants to "kiss it and make it all better", would not the child shrink away from her own mother because she might get infected?
My concern is that this kind of exposure will do more harm than good.

If they show him with to good of a life the kids will might think it is good to have HIV.

Nessy dear, I have quite the reputation for devouring countless cookies in the blink of an eye. So it isn't surprising that he's the one I identify most with. Still, if you think Elmo is the best... I suppose we could have a good old pool party brawl again...
