Well, whilst they were both way out of line neither of them were really deliberately trying to flamebait, which I had always thought was the definition of trollish behaviour. It seems sometimes like everyone who has been banned from IW has been done so for being a troll. Istaron and The Dark were banned for offences even worse than just mindless messing around with people to get a rise out of them.

I think that I am missing your point, Barry. So, if they weren't trolls, what were they?

I`d call them lesser trolls- it`s troll type behavior, with lesser respect for negative reactions.

Well, just in general I think we have lost the meaning of trolling. The Dark and Istaron certainly weren't trolls by the actual definition of trolling. They were still not people I would personally like to have around. Istaron was sick, and unrepentant with it. The Dark was a little quick to condemn and use inflammatory language in both cases that got him banned. But neither of them were posting to get a rise out of people, or "trolling". At least, I don't think so.

A troll is someone who posts outrageous things to flamebait people. They do it for a laugh, just to see what reaction they can get. My brother used to be a textbook definition. He would join up on random chat rooms and message boards just to insult people or try and get himself flamed in the most flagrant way possible. Him and his mates thought it was absolutely hilarious. Fortunately he is reformed now... Another kind of troll was the guy who had brief internet fame a month or so back - Lord SithofSoth, or whatever his name was. There were two options, as someone remarked at the time, he was either: a. a very clever person impersonating a subhuman idiot, or b. a subhuman indiot. So I suppose Tiamat might also have fitted the definition in some ways. I could never be sure with him if he was talking nonsense deliberately to try and piss people of or not.

But anyway, trolling is not very nice but it isn't as nasty as accusing another member of stealing someones phone or making lewd comments about a 14 year old girl. I think sometimes people have a tendency to call anything bad on a message board spam, and a tendency to call anyone out of order a troll. They can be out of order without being a troll or spammer, it is possible...

Well, then, they weren't "just trolls," they were something undefined by internet slang. I shall go back to everyday language and call them "sickos." BTW, "troll" is a medical slang word, also, for a patient who is disgusting. Not much used outside teaching hospitals,I hasten to add, where an "us versus them" attitude prevails.
