The United Nations Security Council has voted to try Sudanese war crime suspects at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Eleven countries voted in favour of prosecuting those suspected of committing war crimes in Darfur; the remaining four Security Council members, among them the United States, abstained.
The US, an opponent of the World Court, decided not to veto the motion after receiving assurances that American citizens based in Sudan would not be tried. The court now has the authority to prosecute those accused of murdering and raping civilians in Darfur. The UN has already identified dozens of suspects. A recent British report says that more than 300,000 people have been killed in the ongoing violence in western Sudan. (rnw.nl) |
