Because this game is designed for you to have complete control over the make-up of your party. You can have as little as 1 and up to 6 characters all rolled and assigned by you. The possibilities are vast and diverse. It is a lot of fun.

Indeed!
Havin' the ability to make up a whole party (full of *your* chars) is much more fun , at least IMO , than goin' with NPC's like in the BG saga... |

There's a lot to be said for both. But if we're honest, it's nice not to have to worry about someone walking out on you because of your reputation.

...OR running off on you when you least expect it to tend to their own petty affairs.. I never have liked picking up NPC's much in my games. I've always preferred my own characters (most characters one pregens anyway are far better than the tripe the game designers foist off on you for NPC's, just my opinion...)

I like creating my own party. Even when I play BGII, I start off with 1 character, then I'll get fed up that there isn't a particular class or kit on offer amongst the NPCs so I'll dump an NPC and create a second PC to add to my party...
Then a little while later, I'll wish that one particular NPC had proficiencies in Flails instead of maces, or should have dualled at a different level, or shouldn't have dualled - and so I create a 3rd character to add... And so on. Thank goodness for multiplayer mode in BGII which enables you to play IWD style... ------------------ Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.
